Mission

MISSION

The mission of the Newman International Academy Department of Public Safety (NIA DPS) is to provide for the protection of lives and property, preserve the public peace, and with the highest level of professionalism and ethical standards, provide the school district administration specialized services, strengthening their ability to prepare students for the challenges of the future effectively and efficiently. It is the goal of the NIA DPS Police Department to educate, and defer students away from the Criminal Justice system, whenever possible and as allowed by law, while serving with wisdom, stature, and favor.

Sir Robert Peel’s Principles of Policing of 1829
(Adopted by NIA DPS)

  1. The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.
  1. The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions.
  1. Police must secure the willing cooperation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.
  1. The degree of cooperation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force.
  1. Police seek and preserve public favor not by catering to the public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law.
  1. Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion, advice and warning is found to be insufficient.
  1. Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.
  1. Police should always direct their action strictly towards their functions and never appear to usurp the powers of the judiciary.
  1. The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it.

CODE OF ETHICS
(Adopted by NIA DPS)

AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, my fundamental duty is to serve the community; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all persons to liberty, equality, and justice.

I WILL keep my private life unsullied as an example to all and will conduct myself in a manner that does not bring discredit to me or to my agency. I will maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty.

I WILL never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, political beliefs, aspirations, animosities, or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminals, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice, or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities.

I RECOGNIZE the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police service. I will never engage in acts of corruption or bribery, nor will I condone such acts by other police officers. I will cooperate with all legally authorized agencies and their representatives in the pursuit of justice.

I KNOW that I alone am responsible for my own standard of professional performance and will take every reasonable opportunity to enhance and improve my level of knowledge and competence.

I WILL constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before God to my chosen profession...LAW ENFORCEMENT.
